Outdoor Summer Activities in Central Texas

Summer is finally here so it’s time to breathe some fresh air and, of course, have some fun. There’s so much to do in Central Texas during the summer season, and it’s home to some truly beautiful nature that you, your friends, and your family can enjoy. In this article, we’ve put together some popular outdoor attractions to spend the day (or several days!) at. If you’re lucky enough to be a resident of the area or plan on visiting, keep these activities in mind this summer.

Enjoy the River

Central Texas is home to a number of popular rivers. Favorites among locals and tourists include: the San Marcos River and the Blanco River (in San Marcos), the Comal and the Guadalupe River (in New Braunfels), the Llano River (in Llano & Junction), the Colorado River, and many others. Activities you can partake in on these rivers includes tubing, paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, and rafting. If you don’t feel like getting in the water, the Riverwalk along the San Antonio river is a popular spot to enjoy the river while visiting shops and restaurants in the area.

Visit a Lake

If hitting the river doesn’t sound like your idea of a good time but you still want to enjoy the water, there’s plenty of other options in the area. Take an outdoor adventure to Zilker Park in Austin’s Barton Springs to cool off a bit. Barton Springs provides a big natural outdoor swimming pool that attracts thousands from all over Texas throughout the year. This unique pool gets its water from underground springs, ranging between 68 to 70 degrees all year round, making it ideal for a summer hangout. If you’re interested in boating or fishing, there are plenty of lakes to spend the day at as well: Lake Travis, Lake Austin, Lake Lyndon B. Johnson, Lady Bird Lake, Lake Marble Falls, and more.

Enjoy the Parks

Central Texas is blessed with a number of parks that you and your family and friends can enjoy year-round. Pedernales Falls State Park is a popular destination for hiking, horseback riding, camping, and enjoying the river. McKinney Falls State Park is another popular destination for hiking, biking, fishing, and camping. Enchanted Rock, a tall and sloping granite dome in Llano, is one of the most iconic destinations for outdoor adventure in the area. It’s a great way to spend a day hiking and exploring, and you can even spend the night if you enjoy camping.

There’s So Much More

We’ve barely scratched the surface of what all there is to do in the area. In other posts we’ll focus on other attractions you can enjoy. If you’re looking for a change of scenery, San Marcos could be the perfect place to call home–it’s centrally located between many of the attractions outlined above (plus home to many of its own attractions!).
